5 Ways to Add Character to a New Construction Home
In Raleigh and the surrounding areas, new construction homes are everywhere. While these homes offer beautiful layouts, modern conveniences, and a fresh start, they can sometimes feel a little… predictable.
Clean walls, standard finishes, and builder-grade details often leave homeowners wondering how to make their space feel more personal and full of character.
That’s where we come in.
My style has always leaned toward spaces that feel timeless, welcoming, and a little lived-in. I love bold colors, layered textures, and design choices that make a home feel warm and collected over time rather than perfectly staged.
The good news is that you don’t need to completely renovate a new build to get that feeling. With a few thoughtful changes, you can give a new construction home character and make it feel like it truly reflects you.
Here are a few of my favorite ways to do it!
1. Add Architectural Details
One of the things older homes do really well is architectural detail. Trim or paneling automatically give a space more depth.
In a new construction home, I like to bring some of that back in. Simple additions like wall molding, picture frame trim, or board and batten can make a room feel more finished and lived in.
Built-ins are another favorite. They add storage, but they also make a space feel custom, like it was designed specifically for that home.
2. Use Wallpaper (Even in Unexpected Places)
Wallpaper is one of the easiest ways to add personality to a space.
It works beautifully in powder rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms; really anywhere you want to introduce pattern or texture. Sometimes we use something bold and colorful, and other times it’s more subtle like a neutral grasscloth.
One of my favorite design moments is wallpapering a ceiling. It’s unexpected, fun, and it instantly makes a room feel more special.
3. Mix Materials and Textures
A lot of builder homes use similar finishes throughout the house, which can make everything feel a little flat.
To warm things up, I like to layer different materials. That might look like mixing warm wood tones, stone or marble, textured fabrics, and metal finishes.
Those layers create contrast and interest, and they help the home feel more natural and collected instead of everything matching perfectly.
4. Swap Out Builder Lighting
Lighting is one of the first things I usually change in a new construction home.
Builder fixtures tend to be simple and functional, but bringing in more interesting lighting can completely change the feel of a room. A beautiful chandelier, statement pendant, or even a pair of sconces can add so much character.
Lighting is also one of the easiest ways to bring warmth into a space.
5. Bring in Color and Personal Pieces
Color is a big part of how I design. Even if it’s just in small ways; paint, wallpaper, textiles, or artwork, it makes a home feel more alive.
Then the finishing layers really bring everything together. Art, books, vintage finds, and meaningful objects help tell the story of the people who live there.
Those personal pieces are what make a home feel comfortable and lived in, rather than like a showroom.
New construction homes are actually a great starting point because they give you a blank slate. With the right layers, architectural details, color, materials, and personal touches, you can turn a brand-new house into a home that feels warm, timeless, and full of character.
And honestly, those are always the spaces that feel the best to actually live in.
